Update: Dream Along with Mickey Returns, Despite Closing Rumors!

Months ago, a rumor spread that Dream Along with Mickey would be closing after its brief refurbishment period. (And by "brief," I mean a month-long.)

But happily, the show did not close and returned to its normal performance schedule on August 23!

Of course, the only problem was that castle hub construction was still going on, so the show and its audience were separated by a tall and wide wall.

BREAKING: Selfie Sticks Entirely Banned at Walt Disney World; Hong Kong and Paris to Follow

Previously, Disney banned selfie sticks on rides, to the surprise of some Guests. However, it makes total sense: there's a reason that before each ride, you're warned about keeping your hands, arms, feet and legs inside the vehicle.

Many of us hoped that Disney should take it a step further and completely ban the sticks from the Parks entirely. (Here's 5 reasons why.)

Effective June 30, all selfie sticks will not be permitted inside Walt Disney World, for any reason. Hong Kong Disneyland and Disneyland Paris are to follow suit soon, WDWNT reports. According to the same report, though not officially confirmed by Disney:

By July 2015, guests will not be permitted to even bring these items into any of the Walt Disney World theme parks due to safety concerns imposed by the items being brought onto rides (and the rather careless ways some guests use them when not on attractions). Guest relations cast members will be assigned to the security screening areas in front of all of the parks to assist the security cast in dealing with guests trying to bring their “selfie sticks” in. If found, guests can opt to take the stick with them and leave, or they can check it with the guest relations cast member who will have the item stored, give the guest a ticket, and request that they retrieve the item upon leaving the park later that day.

Personally, I am quite glad they finally banned them...as tempted as I was to buy a selfie stick for use as a monopod... What are your thoughts?

After all, usually one's not in Walt Disney World alone...why not just have a friend take a picture? Or if you want a friend in the photo, ask someone to take your photo for you!

***UPDATE***

Apparently, the reason this policy is going into effect is as a response to the California Screamin' roller coaster incident on Wednesday. The Disneyland ride was stopped after a guest pulled out a selfie stick on the coaster.

What's the lesson learned? Obey the rules. They're there for a reason. Because at Disney, safety is the most important of the Four Keys.

Four New MagicBand Designs Released This Month!

You can already customize your MagicBand with various accessories to show off your Disney Side, but what about buying a MagicBand that isn’t just a plain ole solid color? How about buying one with your favorite character as the design?

DCONSTRUCTED: Main Street Electrical Parade

Earlier this year, Disney released DCOSTRUCTED, an entire album full of Disney songs remixed by some of the most popular D.J.'s these days.

In my opinion, the remix is only so-so, but the music video is really cool! I love the blurred look on the edges of some shots, and how some of the characters vanish into pixels.

Festival of Fantasy Floats Arrive!

Awhile ago, I shared with you that the Celebrate a Dream Come True parade had ended at Magic Kingdom, to be replaced in March with another parade called Festival of Fantasy.

Well, the floats have arrived!

Float 1: Yes, that is an awesome steampunk Maleficent dragon float – too fantasmic for words!  I literally fangirled when I saw the tweet a few weeks ago about the float because, as you (should) know, Maleficent is one of my favorite Disney characters, especially in her dragon form!  I just hope this isn’t a tie-in to the upcoming movie because, well, you know….

Float 2: this float is going to hold Mickey and Minnie.  I love the colors, and I absolutely adore the use of Fantasia characters.  That movie and its characters needs more spotlight at the Disney Parks!

Float 3: Merida will be astride this bagpipe float, with her bear brothers popping out of the drones.  I think it’s funny how Hubert, Hamish, or Harris (whichever one of the three it was) looked limp in the video….odd that Disney let the animatronic/puppetronic hang loose like that in the video.

Float 4: Can you say WHOA-ho?  (Catch my wordplay there?)  This fantasmic float is going to host Peter Pan and Wendy in the ship, with Captain Hook and Smee on the anchor and Tink in the back.  I absolutely love the different layers and film elements on this float – one of the best!

Two floats Disney “forgot” to include in the video are the The Little Mermaid and Tangled floats, which look just as cool as the others.

I love the colors on the Ariel float and the fact that it reminds me of my favorite Disney parade (Mickey’s Soundsational Parade), and I can’t get over how absolutely astonishing the Tangled float looks.  That one I can’t way to see in person!

What are your thoughts?  I’m thinking we’re in for a pretty fantasmic parade!

Happy Birthday Mickey Mouse!

Today is Mickey (and Minnie) Mouse’s 85th birthday!

On November 18, 1928, “Steamboat Willie” made its film debut, even though “Plane Crazy” was the first Mickey Mouse cartoon screen tested.

November 18 is therefore considered Mickey Mouse’s birthday, though he doesn’t look a day older.

My (Disney character) best friend is celebrating his birthday today!

That’s right: today is Mickey’s (and his leading lady Minnie’s) birthday!

Their first clip, “Steamboat Willie,” came out today in theaters way back in 1928.  Even though Walt created Mickey earlier on a train, today was decided to be the Big Cheese’s big wonderful birthday!

And he’s 84 years old (and looking great!).

Of course, every birthday needs a song, so here’s one just for Mickey – even though he appears in it himself.  But I thought it was appropriate, being Disney and all.  (PS, expect a post just about this song eventually.)

An Out of State Find

At the beginning of the month, MMM and I headed down to the college I'm going to next year (which happens to be the same one The Beast and I visited before).  There was this pre-freshman orientation that weekend.  It ended up being lots of fun, and it was nice to meet my fellow future classmates.

On the way home Saturday afternoon, we (of course) stopped by a gas station to fill up the car and so, you know....well, in case one of us had to "go."

We both did.

When I came out of the restroom, I noticed some of those cheap toy dispensers.  You know, put in a few quarters, get a tattoo or a small toy.  And just like on that other road trip I shared with you about, I noticed one of the dispensers was filled with Disney items.  "Disney tags" to be exact.

Sweet.

I headed back to the van and climbed into my seat.

"Hey, [MMM], when you come out of the restroom, could you buy me two of those Disney tags?  You'll see them right away."

I handed her two quarters.  Oddly enough, she didn't give me a look or anything.

Seems My Disney Family may be accepting me after all.

Anyway, she and I were taking turns because we had some valuables in the car that we didn't want to leave alone.  That's why I went first and then her.

When she came back out, she handed me the two tags (but they come in those flat-bottom-bell-top-you-take-off containers) as she put a new bag of ice into our cooler full of snacks.

Eagerly, I popped open the containers to see which characters I'd gotten.

I think they're both pretty cute.  I actually prefer the Minnie one though, because I don't like how Bambi fills up the entire tag unlike Minnie.

Garage Sale Finds!

After reading about all the different flea markets, garage sale, etc. Disney item finds on blogs such as Disleelandia, I start to dream about it one day happening to me.  One day I'll go to another antique store or something and find a Disney item.  And then I'll buy it!  I won't care what my family may think.

Well, it happened recently!

Last week, my unnamed sister and I headed to our guitar lessons (do not ask me to play please, I'm not that good).  Right down the street from our instructor's house was a garage sale.

Since my sister and I both have half-hour lessons and she was going first that day, I devised a plan and was able to convince my mom to go along with it.  MMM and I would head to the garage sale during my sister's lesson, return in enough time hopefully, and then MMM and my sister would head over to the garage sale, and I'd meet them at the car after my lesson.

MMM and I browsed the garage sale for a bit.  There weren't any Breyer horses (model horses I collect and always keep an eye out).  The only Disney items I found was a Disney Princess paddle thing (you know those paddles with a ball attached by a string?) and a Winnie-the-Pooh picture frame.

MMM refused to buy the frame for me (I planned to pay her back).  So I moved to the book section,  as I love to read.  Maybe a new book to find?

The first bin contained mostly kid books so I flipped through them quickly.

Suddenly a book cover that had a brightly colored photograph of Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, and Pluto caught my eye!  Frantic, I pulled it out of the bin, hands shaking.

It was titled Tokyo Disneyland: A Pictorial Souvenir.

I freaked out!  With a gasp, I spun around and demanded MMM buy the book.  She asked what the price was, and I couldn't find it (later, I realized it was written in Sharpie on a piece of tape.  I was so excited I missed it!).  She finally gave in, seeing how excited I was.  I mean, it's a pretty cool book, circa 1980s based on the costumes and also the fact that Tokyo Disneyland opened in 1983.

One of the best parts is that it's written in Japanese, with English translation.  My sister plans to study Japanese sometime, so MMM thought she'd like to read the book and learn a bit.

For me, the neatest thing is just owning it and being able to "experience" Tokyo Disneyland without having ever going there.

I did some research to find more info on the book, as there isn't any information about the author or the print date.  One site I found had scans of the book pages, stating that the book is a 1985 souvenir book.  However, upon looking through the scans, I discovered that some of the pictures in that web page creator's copy are different than the picture in mine.  Such as the one of Goofy on the Westernland pages: his Goofy is dancing, while mine is standing with two kids.  In fact, I just realized the majority of the pictures in his copy are different than mine.  The cover is even different.

Does this mean there are different versions?  Or were they printed in different years?

Mine has a 4 in the half circle shape on the corner of the cover.  His has a 2.  Does this mean mine was produced in a year ending with 4; his, with 2?  Or does it have nothing at all to do with the year the book was produced?  Because the reviewer Shane does say it's a souvenir book from 1985 on his site...

If you know, please tell me.

I did a Ebay search to see if there was any information at Ebay, but the search produced 0 results.  Barnes and Noble also produced 0 results.  Amazon produced results, but none of them matched.

After finding this book, I found a young adult fantasy novel I'd read before and had been longing to add to my collection.  Added that to my pile.  Then as I moved towards the cash register table, my eye caught a glimpse of Bambi.

It was a coloring book.

Perfect.

Now my bestie won't be the only one.  More on that later.

Yes, it was just a simple coloring poster Disney book.

But hey, it's Disney.  So far I've colored in Lady and Tramp as well as started Peter Pan.  I'll share pictures later.

The last thing Disney item I considered getting was a Princess Aurora doll.  MMM looked at the price and firmly told me 4 dollars is too expensive for a doll.

Oh well.

Good Morning America And Disney

As always, I was just surfing my blogs to see if anything really Disney newsworthy had come up, anything I thought would be worth repeating.

And as always, there was something.

The Disney Parks Blog this time.  If you haven't checked them out yet, you should.

According to a new post, "Good Morning America" teamed up with Disney for the GMA Disney Memory Makers, and the winners were awarded this morning live on the show.

"The contest asked viewers to nominate someone special in their lives who created an amazing memory for them. Three winners were chosen: Two girls who helped save their mother’s life; a member of the U.S. Armed Forces who returned from Afghanistan to quickly become a stepfather to three teenagers; and a boy who made senior year memorable for a student with Downs Syndrome by taking her to the prom," reported Jennifer Fickly-Baker, Social Media Manager, over at the blog (she wrote the post).

When the winners were awarded today, the show hosts surprised them live at Times Square.  With the hosts were the Big Cheese himself and his girl--Mickey and Minnie!

The winners each received a trip to a Disney Park.

The post included a link to a yahoo video.  The winners' stories were explained (wow, my own eyes are watery), and then Mickey and Minnie ran in!

It was kind of cute, actually.  GMA co-host Lara Spencer introduced them as the biggest memory makers of all.  And that's definitely true!  Ask any Disney Parks visitor, and I bet you money that one of their biggest memories (past or present) is meeting Mickey and/or Minnie.

Well, I won't bet on myself, as I haven't met them yet (still getting over that fear).  I do have an autograph though!

So to end this post, here's to the heroes who pretty soon will be saying "Good morning, America!" from a Disney Park.

Hey, It Was 50 Cents!

What do you know?  I went on another road trip!  This time with my youth group to a retreat.  And again, I'm not going to talk about the retreat.  Instead (again), I'm going to talk about the trip home.

So it's a 12 hour drive back to Minnesota.  We stop a few times for breaks such as restroom stops, gas stops, and food stops.  This time was really just a restroom stop, but if you were quick you were allowed to buy food.

If you were quick.

I came out of the bathroom and noticed several boys crowding around those cheap toy machines where you put in a few quarters and get so-said cheap toy.  Or tattoos/stickers.  Or candy.

We'd stopped at this same place on the trip to the retreat, so I'd already known there were some Disney tattoos.

Who's going to miss out on a chance like that?  Come on, they were 50 cents!  Cheap!

Chink, chink.  Put the two quarters in.  Push the coins in.  Out slides the tattoo.  In a nice piece of cardboard keeping it safe.

Wacky Disney Costumes

While checking out one of my favorite Disney sites, the Disney Wiki, I found they'd added new pages with pictures of different Disney characters as their costumes evolved through the years.  And there were some pretty wacky ones!

Remember that I was saying about being kinda afraid of atmosphere characters?  Trust me, I'd be a bit freaked out seeing these ones!  I'm not even sure I'd be brave enough to ask for an autograph.  Would you?

A Bear and his Hunny

First is Winnie the Pooh's original costume.  (I caught a glimpse of this earlier on a Disney on Ice post shared by A Snow White Sanctum!)

According to the Disney Wiki, this costume even had a moving nose, ears, and tongue!

I may not be a little kid anymore, but even I'd maybe burst into tears at the sight of that!  Actually, just kidding.  That's a bit exaggerated, isn't it?  Still, it's quite an interesting costume.  Why does he have that hunny pot on top of his head?

Unbeknownst to us all, Pooh has a great sense of...physical balance.

Good news that the next Pooh costume looked a lot more like his animated self...and lost the hunny pot.

Now the rest of your day you're going to be remembering that hunny pot aren't you!

Look at That Conscious!

The second costume I want to show you is of Jiminy Cricket, the smart little conscious of the puppet Pinocchio.  When the Pinocchio characters first appeared at Disneyland, this is what Jiminy looked like.

The Mouse Who Started It All

What Disney post is complete without Mickey Mouse?

Let me be bold here: Mickey Mouse is probably the costume character that scares me the most.  It's no joke that the "hard head" costume characters freak me out the most.  (If you have any suggestions to get over this fear of mine, please tell me!)

Well, maybe Goofy...and Minnie Mouse (but she'd be tied).

Speaking of Minnie, both her and Mickey had a few wacky costumes when they started out!

Here are pictures of the first three costumes they appeared in to greet guests at Disneyland.

looks like a person with a giant head on top.  If I look at just the legs and feet,

And what I view as the wackiest costumes!
Giant heads, giant hats.
Can't get any better (or did I mean
worse?) than this.
(Luckily, it got better.)

Out of those three, which do you think is the wackiest?

And this might sound a bit mean, but the last costumes make me think of balloons...

All the seemingly anti-Disney comments throughout this post are meant for humor, not meaning that I am losing my Disney Freak title....

So final question, would you approach these characters?  Or did you?  Most of these costumes appeared in the 1950's.
