Molly's note: I originally wrote this as an essay assignment for Business Ethics last semester (Fall 2014). It was graded an A, with notes from the professor: "NICE job explaining -- this is unusually well-done" and "your analysis of Kant is so unusually good." So, I figured it worth sharing here. All Immanuel Kant quotations are taken from his Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals.
Disney released a retelling of its classic Sleeping Beauty over the summer, delving into the backstory of their villain Maleficent. In Maleficent, the villain has been recreated with a new backstory. However, Kant would wonder who is more Kantian: traditional Maleficent or the recreated Maleficent?
As much as I hate the re-imagined Maleficent, I would argue she is much more Kantian than the traditional Maleficent. And it's all because of her maxim, compared to the original character's maxim.
Kant introduces the maxim when he says "the will can be subjectively determined by the maxim that I should follow such a law" (13). We defined, in class, the maxim as what you say to yourself about why you're willing or doing something. Kant believes the principle of morality (or universal morality) is based on a universal maxim, or a maxim everyone should follow, not just for ourselves. "For I should never act except in such a way that I can also will my maxim should become universal law" (14). With this in mind, we can now analyze each Maleficent's maxim and her actions to determine who has the maxim which can be willed universally.
Original Maleficent cursed baby Aurora because she wasn't invited to the christening party. But there's more to it than that. Maleficent's maxim is "I want to make everyone's lives miserable, just for my own enjoyment." It's a great maxim for a villain to have, but is it universal? Not at all.
First, to back up her maxim, let us examine Original Maleficent's actions. She kidnaps Prince Philip so as to make his life miserable in missing his true love and being frustrated in his inability to escape and kiss Aurora. She curses Aurora so as to make King Stefan and the Queen's lives miserable in that they now fear and dread for their daughter. She also taunts Philip about not letting him leave until he's practically decayed, to make him miserable in that he won't save Aurora until it's practically too late (he will be an old man, but the princess eternally young). Maleficent scolds the three good fairies and laughs in their faces to make them miserable in their guilt for leaving Aurora alone to her fate. Therefore, we can see Maleficent's maxim is to make others miserable, because as a villain, she enjoys it.
However, this is not a good universal maxim. If everyone made each other miserable, the world would be a terrible place. Also, no one would enjoy it, as Maleficent intends to, because if everyone's maxim is to make others miserable, then one person is both making others miserable and being made miserable. And that's not enjoyable. So there is no personal enjoyment in an universal maxim based off Original Maleficent's. Therefore, she is not Kantian.
Let us now examine Re-imagined Maleficent. The interesting thing about her is that her maxim actually changes. At first, it is similar to Original Maleficent's: new Maleficent's first maxim is "have my revenge by making other's lives miserable." This is seen in how she gets revenge on King Stefen (for breaking her heart and "raping" her of her wings) by cursing Aurora.
But as Re-imagined Maleficent begins to develop a relationship with Aurora, her maxim changes. Maleficent becomes an anti-hero, regretting the curse she placed on Aurora. She tries to take it back and, when she cannot, tries to fix it by bringing Aurora's true love to her to wake her. Finally, she also (SPOILER) kisses Aurora's forehead and breaks her own spell. This is all reflected in her second maxim: "Make someone else's life better than my own."
Re-imagined Maleficent was hurt by the "lie" of true love, but she realized the only way to help Aurora was to bring in the princess' true love (which ends up being Maleficent). Maleficent is heartbroken over true love, but she does not want Aurora to be, and so her second maxim is true.
It is also an universal maxim. If everyone tried hard to make others' lives better than his or her own, the world would be a less selfish world. It would be moving closer to Kant's kingdom of ends: "a systematic union of different rational beings through common laws" (39). This is Kant's ideal world, and if everyone followed Re-imagined Maleficent's second maim to put others' lives before our own, we would be closer to this ideal kingdom.
Also, her second maxim closely reflects what Kant writes about dignity. Kant writes: "Act in such a way that you treat humanity...always at the same time as an end and never simply as a means" (36). This means persons should not be treated as objects, or things, to get what one wants. But with Re-imagined Maleficent's second maxim, persons/others are treated as ends, and not selfishly, but unselfishly, for that other person. No one is using another, but is simply respecting that person.
Kant sums up his universal maim as the categorical imperative in this way: "Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law" (30). Re-imagined Maleficent's maxim can become universal, and therefore is the categorical imperative, whereas Original Maleficent's maxim cannot become universal. So to sum up, Re-imagined Maleficent is the more Kantian in this battle of the two Maleficents.

1000 Facebook Likes/Twitter Followers!
So something pretty darn fantastic happened to me yesterday evening.
I reached 1,000 likes on Facebook!
And probably a month or two ago, I reached 1,000 followers on Twitter!
In honor of both incredible milestones, I made a “live” video from last night while I waited for my Facebook likes to reach 1,000. It wasn’t posted live, but my reactions were all live reactions. Plus, I posted it basically right away, so it felt live, if you get my drift.
In short, watch it below:
Thank you to all of my 1,000 Facebook likes and 1,000 Twitter followers (both of which continue to climb daily), and I can’t wait for the next 1,000 to join us!
Special thanks to Dani MacInnes for being my 1000th like and Princess Laura (@DisneyRosary) for being my 1000th follower!

Big Announcement!
You’re probably wondering about the current inactivity at this blog.
And this is why:
The first issue of the newspaper came out last Saturday, and it went really well! I think once I get into the groove of things, I can start posting here again, but it will be very minimal with short, easy-to-write-quickly updates.
Until I’m back on a steady basis again, please stick with me!
Thank you!

The Weirdest Present Ever Received
We watched Cinderella late last night/early this morning, which made me remember this story….
It was the last day of freshman year. Roomie had left just a few hours earlier, headed back home for summer break. My dad had just arrived to help me pack up the car and take me home.
As I brought my stuff into the hall for him to take to the van, I realized someone had left a present outside my door.
Now I don’t know if whoever left it there meant it as a joke or what, but the present wasn’t anything I would have been expecting.

Disney Concert Tonight!
This is the news blurb Benedictine College has been sending out via their email newsletter:
I’m so excited to see this tonight! (Provided I can get off work early enough…)
Literally everyone who knows me and my Disney “Freakness” has been telling me, “Molly, I thought of you when I heard about the Pops Concert! Are you going?” and I reply, “What kind of question is that?!”
I actually did a really-really-excited-because-I-can’t-wait-to-go dance in Walmart last night…
Tonight, I’ll probably be silently singing along to every word.
Tune in again soon for a video of (hopefully) the entire show!

On Running Away and Loving Mickey Mouse
I am going to be posting a video and pictures soon featuring one of my dorm friends, Bridget. But today, I’m going to talk about Bridget’s first roommate, who wanted to be anonymous. But this friend and I are what you could call Mickey friends.
You see, she and I both absolutely adore Mickey Mouse, so we would often well, fangirl over him. And because she loved Mickey so much, she was very accepting of my huge love for Disney.
So much that she printed these off for me on really nice photo paper.
Mickey Mouse or running away to Disney World. I don’t know which is better.
Well, I guess Mickey Mouse is at Walt Disney World, so I suppose they go hand-in-hand.

You Are the Glow!
I raved in a previous post how much I love the song “The Glow” that the beautiful and talented Shannon Saunders sings. For those of you who don’t recognize or remember the song, here it is below.
During this past school year, I discovered that when the volume is set quietly, this is actually a really great song to listen to on repeat as I study. So one day after listening to it over and over, I was so excited about the song that I wrote the chorus lyrics on the whiteboard outside my dorm room.
Just so everyone would know that they “are the glow”!

Maleficent and Mickey Fun!
I filmed this back during the school year, before Christmas break, I’m pretty sure. While studying, I listen to Disney music, mostly instrumentals/scores from my favorite movie soundtracks. This particular time, the parade music for the Main Street Electrical Parade at Disneyland started playing, and noticing my Solar Mickey’s head swaying, I just had to get my camera out. Of course, Mini Maleficent had to get her time in the spotlight too!
I’m planning on getting some posts specifically on both Mini Maleficent and Solar Mickey separately, both parts of my personal Disney collection. But for now, enjoy the random video above starring both of them – I mean, really: who does homework in college?

Hidden Mickey in the Cafeteria
After a long dinner shift at work one day (during the school year, I work at the Cafeteria -- loving called "the Caf" by BC students -- at Benedictine, where I go to school), I was cleaning up and getting ready for the brunch shift the next day. As I was cleaning up the condiments (we always serve burgers during dinner), I noticed a familiar shape among the mayo…
It totally made my day! Reminds me of another time I noticed a Hidden Mickey at Benedictine….
Have you ever seen any random Hidden Mickeys? Tell me in the comments or post on my page on Facebook!

Take a Wild Ride!
Awhile ago, around the middle of April, my friend Bridget and I went to the local thrift shop in Atchison. My semester was getting to be stressed and not fun for me, so she wanted to have me do something for fun, not for school or work. And I love thrift stores, so she decided to take me there.
While the overall selection wasn’t as great as other thrift stores, they did have plenty of books and movies! I got like 12 books, 3 VHS tapes, a Animal Kingdom glass, a present for Bestie, and a present for Roomie all for $4! I couldn’t believe it.
One of the VHS tapes I got was The Wind in the Willows, which originally was half of the animated feature The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. This is a classic Disney film, the 11th animated feature in the animated canon, so I figured it would be fun to get it for the kids (as in siblings) to watch and enjoy.
Even though I’ve had the VHS sitting in my dorm room for awhile, I didn’t get home until late Tuesday night. We watched the movie today – twice! It’s actually very cute and funny, and I really enjoyed the characters.
Upon doing research on the movie, as I like to learn trivial information and facts about movies I watch, I remembered that there is a ride at Disneyland based on the short film (and there once was a similar ride at Disney World before the Pooh ride replaced it).
Like the movie, the dark ride is wild and crazy, so the videos on YouTube don’t really do it justice, but you can get an idea of what it’s like.
That’s all for now. I’ll be posting again really soon for Merida’s coronation – just two days away!

Looks Like the Start to a Monstrous Summer!
I may be at Benedictine College now, but I can guarantee that come June 21, I will happily be on another campus! “Where?” you might ask. Monsters University campus, that’s where!
So if you didn’t get my “joke” there, what I mean is that I’ll be going to see the new movie Monsters University, the Pixar prequel to Monsters, Inc., when it comes out in June.
To celebrate the upcoming release, Disney has started an event called “Monstrous Summer!” at both ends of the US: Disney World in Florida and Disneyland Park in California!
Remember One More Disney Day last year?
Well, Monstrous Summer also has an all-nighter event going on during Memorial Weekend – 24 hours straight from May 24 to May 25.
And to announce the upcoming all-nighter, Mike Wazowski himself took over Spaceship Earth.
Not only that, but both scary stars of the flicks are soon to do meet and greets in their college attire. Sulley now sports his college jacket, while Mike has a MU hat and retainer.
While they’ve only met the media and Disney employees so far, “Mike and Sulley will soon be personally meeting and greeting with guests at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in their collegiate attire at the Monsters University Student Union, complete with a view of the campus.”

A Forgotten Treasure
I’d shared with you via Facebook early last semester (around September) that someone had put up a coloring page of Belle and Beast on the bulletin board outside the Cafeteria. So I realize this is late, but I did get a picture of it not long after I told you. I was unable to access it from where I had it stored until later in the semester, but by then I had forgotten.
But here it is! Uncovered from the many pictures I have on my computer.
It made my day brighter every single time I saw it was still up there. Eventually, it was taken down for unknown reasons.
